2012/13 Dependent Checklist

STEP 1:

Federal Student Aid PIN and Free Application for Federal Student Aid Form (FAFSA)

If you or your parent do not have a Federal Student Aid PIN, you each will need to apply for one through the FAFSA website. You will immediately receive a conditional PIN on the website. Be sure to keep and safeguard your PIN; you will need it for future years and other processes. You and your parent will each use the PIN to electronically sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and any Loan Master Promissory Notes.

If you have all ready completed your FAFSA for this award year, please use your PIN and make a correction by adding our school code, 004057 Rapid City, SD (for all campuses), on the FAFSA website.

New and Continuing Students:
Every award year you will need to apply for financial aid.

Use IRS Data Retrieval to download your 2011 Federal Tax Return information within your FAFSA!

STEP 2:

Submit the Application for Financial Aid. All other forms-print, complete, sign and send or drop off to your campus.

New Students:

New and Continuing Students:

If you have any outside resources helping you pay your educational expenses or the amount of the outside resources has changed since last year, please notify your Campus Financial Service Representative. Outside Resources include Scholarships, non-federal grants (BIA, Tribal Assistance, etc.), Military Tuition Assistance (active duty, reserve, guards), Company Tuition Assistance, Vocational Rehabilitation benefits, private alternative loans, Work Force Investment Act (WIA), Training Assistance Act (TAA), gifts, etc.

STEP 3:

Minnesota State Residents only attending Bloomington, Burnsville, Brooklyn Center, Minnetonka, Roseville, and Distance Learning (if living in Minnesota) print, complete, sign and send or drop off to your campus the following forms:

STEP 4:

You will receive notification to retrieve your Student Aid Report (SAR) by e-mail within 48 hours if you provided your e-mail address on your FAFSA. Review all of your answers and notify us if you have any corrections to be made.

STOP HERE: Do Step 5 after you receive confirmation your (and your parent's) PIN is valid.

Previous Direct Loan Borrowers regardless of which school attended-Do not need to complete Step 5.

STEP 5:

On the Direct Loan Website, complete Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Notes. Regardless of which campus you are affiliated with, be sure to choose the “School State” as South Dakota and the “School Name” as National American University (no city listed). This should bring up NAU with a Rapid City, SD address. If you do not choose the state and school correctly, you may have problems continuing with the MPN process. See below for the specific steps you may need to complete.

Student and Parent: Select the "Manage My Student Loan" section. At "My Profile," sign in with your Federal Student Aid PIN and verify your personal information. https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action

Student (New student loan borrowers): Choose "Complete Entrance Counseling." Once complete, choose "Complete Master Promissory Note" and then click on "Subsidized/Unsubsidized."

Student (Previous FFELP loan borrower): Choose "Complete Master Promissory Note" and then click on "Subsidized/Unsubsidized."

Parent (New PLUS Loan borrowers): Choose "Complete Master Promissory Note" and then click on "Parent PLUS." Once you have completed the PLUS MPN, you will need to request a PLUS credit check by chosing "Request a PLUS Loan."

Parent (Previous Direct Loan PLUS Loan borrowers): Choose "Request a PLUS Loan" to request an updated PLUS Loan credit check.
