Financial Aid Award Year 2009-2010 - Independent Checklist

STEP 1:  Department of Education PIN and Federal Financial Aid Form (FAFSA)

If you don't already have a PIN, apply for one now.  Your conditional PIN will either be given to you immediately on the Web site when you apply or e-mailed to you immediately from the Federal Government.  Be sure to keep and safeguard your PIN as you will need it for future years and other processes.  You will need a PIN to submit and electronically sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (Section 2 of the web site).

Some students find it helpful to fill out a Pre-Application Worksheet first (Section 1 of the web site).  If you have all ready completed your FAFSA for this award year, please use your PIN and make a correction by adding our school code, 004057, Rapid City, SD to your processed FAFSA (Section 3 of the web site).

    New Students:
Apply for a US Dept. of Education PIN - www.pin.ed.gov

    New and Continuing Students:
Every award year you will need to apply for financial aid.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid - www.fafsa.ed.gov    (Use the 2009/10 year)

STEP 2:  National American University (NAU) Forms.

Submit Application for Financial Aid.  All other forms print, complete, sign, and send or drop off to your campus.

STEP 3:  Minnesota State Residents only attending Bloomington, Brooklyn Center, Roseville, and Distance Learning (if living in Minnesota), must print, complete, sign, and then send or drop off to your campus the following forms:

STEP 4:  You will receive notification to retrieve your Student Aid Report (SAR) by e-mail within 48 hours.  If you did not provide an e-mail address,  then you will receive notification in the mail about two weeks after submitting your FAFSA.  Review all of the answers on your SAR and notify us of any corrections to be made.

STOP HERE: Do Step 5 after you receive confirmation that your PIN is valid!

STEP 5:  Once you have received your Student Aid Report (SAR), if you have not borrowed a Federal Student Loan before or you are transferring into NAU, you will need to complete and submit a Stafford Master Promissory Note (MPN) for your loans. The Master Promissory Note will be electronically signed using the Department of Education PIN.  You will be directed to complete Loan Entrance Counseling during the process of completing your MPN.
