Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice You have a heart for service to the community—and we have the heart to help you succeed. The criminal justice Associate of Applied Science degree program offered through NAU’s school in Austin, TX serves as a foundation for career positions such as police officer, deputy sheriff, state highway patrol officer, court clerk, court bailiff, correctional officer, probation officer, parole officer, as well as various federal law enforcement positions. NAU’s Criminal Justice program provides you with the skills necessary to make insightful decisions in the field and prepare you to join other admirable public servants in your community. With active law enforcement officers and attorneys teaching many of our courses—you will receive the foundation you need coupled with real-world experience from the field. The program’s mission is to equip students with the ability to think critically about the cause and effect of criminal behavior; to approach investigations, corrections, and rehabilitation using current evidence-based practices; to provide students with the ethical guidelines and skills necessary to make insightful decisions in the field; and to prepare students to join the ranks of exemplary public servants in their communities.

Austin Criminal Justice Degree
For students whose goal is to pursue a career in the field of criminal justice, NAU's school in Austin offers the criminal justice associate of applied science degree. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a foundation in the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the criminal justice career field. Students who earn the associate of applied science degree are prepared for entry-level employment in policing, courts, and corrections. Policing and institutional corrections employment will also require the completion of a training academy. The associate degree can be a requirement for entry-level employment in various criminal justice agencies and is often criteria for higher skilled employment and higher pay scales. In some agencies, the associate of applied science degree can be a requirement or weighted factor in the promotion process. The student with an associate of applied science degree in criminal justice is qualified to apply for the positions of police patrol officer, court clerk, court bailiff, correctional officer, probation officer, parole officer, and some federal positions with the requisite law enforcement experience.

Program Information

State certification bodies and individual agencies may have additional criteria that must be met before a candidate can become a certified or licensed law enforcement officer. Please review that criterion with the state, agency, or department of interest. NAU is not a Minnesota POST Board Certified Professional Peace Officer Education Program. Without reciprocity, students in Minnesota are not eligible to sit for the licensing exam upon completion of an NAU Bachelor Science/Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice degree Programs.
