Paralegal Studies Associate of Applied Science

Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies A Paralegal is defined by the American Bar Association (“ABA”) as an individual who is retained by a lawyer, law office, or corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.” National American University offers degree programs in both the Associate of Applied Science and the Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies. The Paralegal Studies degree offered at NAU's Minneapolis / St. Paul (Roseville) campus provides students with the technical knowledge of a law office applications and the substantive legal knowledge to be a critical part of a legal team. The program is approved by the ABA at the Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro (Bloomington, Brooklyn Center, Burnsville, Minnetonka, and Roseville).

Certification Exam

Paralegals can seek certification from National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Students from NAU are qualified to sit for the CLA exam and can receive the designation of "Certified Paralegal" or "CP" after successfully passing the exam. Paralegals can also seek certification from the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) through their PCCE exam. Graduates from NAU with two years of experience in the legal field are qualified to sit for the PCCE exam and can receive the designation of "Registered Paralegal" or "RP".

Program Information

The paralegal studies program offered at the Rapid City and Sioux Falls campuses are separately approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). The program offered in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area, including the Bloomington campus, Brooklyn Center campus, Burnsville campus, Roseville campus, and Minnetonka campus, is separately approved by the ABA.

 
“Working as a CNA for the past 6 years, Shakiera was needing a career change. Being able to get signed up right away for the Phlebotomy course is what helped motivate Shakiera to get started with NAU. “I chose NAU because they worked with me due to financial reasons and there wasn’t a waiting list to get signed up for classes.” Once Shakiera graduates she plans on getting certified and then wants to work in a clinic until she is able to start her nursing program."

About Roseville

National American University’s Roseville campus is conveniently located near the Rosedale Shopping Center. The Roseville campus has been serving students in the Minneapolis area since 1974, and has long been considered one of NAU’s flagship campus locations.
