Transfer your years of military experience into college credit.
National American University offers services to meet your unique needs by offering flexible class schedules, credit for life, work and military experience, and free military evaluations. You may be surprised at just how fast you can complete your studies. NAU arranges the quickest path to a degree and full credit for your military education by taking advantage of American Council on Education (ACE) credit assessment services. ACE continuously evaluates military schools, correspondence courses and occupations to determine the amount and level of academic credit each should be awarded. Through ACE credits, you may earn academic credit for most of the training you have received, including basic training, and you can reduce the time required and cost for your studies. Joint Services Transcript (JST) is an academically accepted document approved by ACE to validate a service member's military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE college credit recommendations. The Army is now producing a Joint Services Transcript that can be accessed by all Active Duty, Reserves and Veterans.
A student may obtain up to 50 percent of the required credit hours toward graduation from non-traditional methods including:
a. experiential learning/portfolio credit awarded by National American University,
b. evaluated corporate training certificates, and
c. non-transcripted military training.
National American University offers College Level Examination Program (CLEP) for credit in a number of courses. Students may earn credit hours as indicated but no grades.
The nationally recognized DSST program(formerly DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) helps students receive college credit for learning outside of the traditional classroom through credit by examination. Click here for a list of the DSST exams for which National American University has equivalent courses, and credit hours toward graduation may be earned.
Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) and Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Army Degree (SOCAD)
National American University has been designated as an institutional member of Service Members Opportunity Colleges (SOC). As an SOC member, NAU has committed itself to easing the transfer of relevant course credits providing flexible academic residency requirement for active duty servicemembers of no more than 25% of the total credit hours required for graduation, and credits for learning from appropriate military training and experiences.
As a participating institution of SOC, these are several of the membership benefits:
- Guaranteed Course Transfer- SOC Degree Network System (DNS) Core member institutions guarantee transfer of courses in SOC DNS Course Categories, so that courses may be transferred back to the home college without prior approval.
- Student Agreement- Your home college agrees to issue a Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Army Degree (SOCAD) Student Agreement (evaluation of completed and remaining degree requirements) by the time you complete six semester hours of credit with that college.
- Credit for Non-Traditional Learning - SOCAD colleges award credit for military experience and training based on American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations, and standardized tests such as CLEP and DANTES, where it is appropriate to your degree plan.
National American University is also a member of the Concurrent Admissions Program (ConAP) for Army enlistees. ConAP is a partnership between over 1,900 participating colleges, the Army Recruiting Command and Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC). As a ConAp member we’ve agreed to use good academic practice in accepting courses from other colleges, use the American Council on Education Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services (ACE Guide) to award credit for military courses that fit a student's curriculum and award credit for at least one nationally-recognized testing program.
