Course Description

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) course is designed to prepare students to become a nationally certified clerical healthcare professional—with or without previous healthcare experience.

This course prepares the student to take the certificate exam administered by the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC). To that end, students receive targeted, skill-based instruction from teachers who are active NAHUC members.

  • History of the HUC role
  • Legal responsibilities
  • Effective, professional communication in the health care industry
  • Ethical and efficient work practices
  • Clerical skills
  • Safety
  • Transcribing of physician’s orders
  • Computer security
  • Health information privacy (HIPAA)
  • Medical terminology, including a brief disease overview

Class consist of 240 hours of classroom time and 96 hours of preceptorship working with a HUC. This course will prepare you to take the Health Unit Coordinator Certificate Exam.

Prerequisites

High school diploma or GED.
