Graduates of NAU’s OTA program are eligible to take the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of the exam, the graduate will be a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA). In addition, all states require licensure, which is generally based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Exam. A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination and obtain state licensure.
Students are required to attend OTA specific courses at the Centennial or Independence campus.
The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) programs offered at the Centennial, Colo. and Independence, Mo. campuses, are accredited through the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814-3449. ACOTE’s telephone number, c/o AOTA, is 301-652-AOTA. www.acoteonline.org.
Effective April 1, 2017, ACOTE changed the accreditation status of the AAS OTA program offered at the Independence Campus to Probationary Accreditation for noncompliance with ACOTE Standard A.5.6. (certification exam pass rates). The program remains accredited and the university has been requested to submit a plan of correction to return to full compliance with the Standard. This change only affects the ACOTE accreditation of AAS OTA program offered at the Independence campus.
