For the second time in five years, Coach Todd Lowery and the Maverick women have brought home the championship trophy from the NAIA national tournament.
The Mavericks had a perfect season with 41 wins and no losses. They seemed to dance to their second NAIA National Championship. It wasn’t even until the championship match itself that the team was seriously challenged.
“In game one of the championship match we were ahead in the first set of the championship match 27-21 and weren’t able to close out the set. We ended up losing 35-33,” Lowery said. “We came back and won handily in game two, and played a close game in game three and won 31-29.”
"Going into game four we started to feel like we were in control of the match. We go off to an early nine-point lead and kept it going. We ended up winning 30-22.” “That was probably the best championship match that we’ve seen in the last five years at the national tournament.” At the end of game four with their “best three out of five” accomplished, the Mav’s were coming home with the trophy.
Lowery, who at thirty is very young to have such a record, credits the great season to his outstanding athletes who are carefully recruited. “A lot of it goes back to the quality of athletes,” he said. “National championships are won in the off season. You have to recruit talented kids, and once you recruit all those talented kids, it’s your job to figure out how to put them together and have them succeed as a team.”
