National American University Announces Fall 2017 Faculty of the Quarter

Congratulations to Ms. Sharon Garrett and Dr. Claudia Oglivie!

It is a great pleasure to announce National American University’s Fall 2017 Faculty of the Quarter, Ms. Sharon Garrett and Dr. Claudia Oglivie!  These outstanding members of the faculty are recognized for their significant accomplishments – inside and outside of the classroom, their ability to create a dynamic learning environment, and their support of students’ academic success.

Ms. Sharon Garrett, has served on the National American University nursing faculty at the Zona Rosa (Kansas City, Missouri) Campus since 2015.  Ms. Garrett, who teaches ground and online classes, is a well-respected educator, colleague, and leader among the faculty.  She graciously accepts additional responsibilities and works diligently to ensure she is well-prepared to handle them effectively.  Ms. Garrett is supportive of student success and challenges her students to take responsibility for their own success.  Her faculty colleagues report that she is an excellent mentor and advisor who is never too busy to help others.  As a result of Ms. Sharon Garrett’s strong work ethic, commitment to her students and colleagues, and her unwavering support of National American University and the School of Nursing, we are proud to announce her selection as a Fall 2017 Faculty of the Quarter award recipient!

Dr. Claudia Oglivie is a member of the National American University School of Nursing faculty in San Antonio, Texas.  She brought a “wealth of experience,” after spending more than 20 years in the U.S. Army as a program director and assistance chief.  As a result of her exemplary service to her country, Dr. Oglivie was awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medals.  Following her military career, she taught at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and San Antonio College of Nursing Education.  In 2017, Dr. Oglivie joined the nursing faculty at National American University, where she is described as “an extraordinary teacher” and “a respected leader” who is “devoted to her students and their success.”  “In the classroom and clinical settings, she uses innovative activities to help students engage with the material and utilize critical thinking, communication and leadership skills.  She encourages and is a role model for the students to become knowledgeable, professional nurses.  Her students report that she is ‘strict and challenging but she brings out the best in us,’ ‘Dr. O has changed my life,’ and ‘We love her.’”  Outside of the classroom, “Dr. Oglivie has been instrumental in assisting with curriculum issues and in obtaining/management of clinical sites for students.”  In recognition of Dr. Oglivie’s outstanding skill in the classroom, commitment to promoting excellence in her profession, contributions to the School of Nursing, National American University will add an award for Fall 2017 Faculty of the Quarter to Dr. Claudia Oglivie’s long list of well-deserved honors!

 

The Faculty of the Quarter are nominated by academic officers, campus executives, faculty members, and staff members.  They receive a one-time stipend, as well as a certificate documenting their achievement.
