For individuals who are disciplined, hard-working, and highly motivated, there are career options that will utilize your strengths, and allow you to positively contribute to our country’s security. Perhaps it is time to consider pursuing a career in Counterterrorism.

Counterterrorism Professionals Keep Our Country Safe

Counterterrorism professionals are active participants in preserving the safety of our country. Through counterterrorism efforts, our country pursues a national security system that is proactive, rather than reactive, in nature. This means that much of our country’s counterterrorism efforts address threats that have not yet even materialized, with the intention of neutralizing threats before the population even knows they exist. As citizens, we depend upon these counterterrorism professionals to preempt attacks, disrupt foreign terrorist networks, and provide the intelligence necessary to defeat them.

Counterterrorism Graduate Develop Special Skills

In counterterrorism, the intentions, motivations, plans, and capabilities of foreign terrorist groups are analyzed and assessed in order to identify specific threats to the U.S. and our interests. As experts of analysis, counterterrorism professionals study and evaluate information from a wide variety of sources in order to develop “meaningful and usable” intelligence assessments. Intelligence information may come through foreign newspapers, foreign broadcasts, human intelligence, and satellite surveillance, and can often be incomplete or conflicting. Because of this, a great deal of in-depth research, extended surveillance periods, and patience are necessary.

Counterterrorism Duties and Responsibilities

Counterterrorism professionals are responsible for many duties, including:

  • Analyzing information on terrorist groups in order to gain an understanding of their activities, objectives, and plans
  • Producing written intelligence products regarding their findings
  • Briefing U.S. policymakers and foreign partners
  • Briefing military officials and intelligence partners
  • Providing analytic support to law enforcement and U.S. partners
  • Supporting intelligence operations by highlighting counterterrorism targeting opportunities
